Arkansas' Rap King Has Arrived

Rod L Mosby, better known by his stage name Muniklip, is an American rapper. He caught the eyes and ears of listeners in the Middle Eastern country of Bahrain with the help of a US soldier, Thomas Braxton, with the release of his album Gut Check: Final Cut (2006). The album achieved minor success but packed enough punch to earn him a spot on his first overseas tour as an independent artist and expand his online presence.
Not being one to use beef to gain popularity in 2007 Muniklip released a track online entitled, “It’s Muniklip.” There was a hint of anger and disdain in his voice as he laced the track. In the song his dissed local radio station directors Broadway Joe & DJ No Name for their lack of support for local artists. He also took a shot at many local artists that he felt showed him no respect at a show he headlined at Juanitas in Little Rock. Many artists attacked him on Myspace and warned that if he didn’t take the song offline consequences would follow. There were many that praised him for saying what they had thought and felt for years. Klip exclaims, “I remember the day it dropped, and Big Keys called me at home. He said that he was confused and thought he and I were cool. A bunch of people heard the track, jumped to conclusions, and got Keys upset. I assured him that I got caught up in the moment and spit whatever came to mind.” What he was referring was a line that said “if Big Keys wanna battle, I’ll put him in a verse”. The track was spun 24,000 times in 2 days. No artist in the Little Rock area responded. One local label owner exclaimed that Muniklip had crossed the line but would not become famous if he had anything to do with it.
Klip is the owner of the indie label Single R Records and has been in business for himself since 2004. He answered the following questions during an interview.
US – Has this been your sole source of income for the past years?
Klip – I wish! LOL. Nah, I’m like everyone else that isn’t famous. I get up in the morning, put my pants on one leg at a time, and work my 9 to 5.
US – Is it fulfilling to you to have to do this, or would you rather be somewhere else?
Klip - It’s almost embarrassing to me to do anything but music. I have an original sound. No day job feels right. I know that I’m worth more than any job could ever pay. I’d rather put in 8 hours in the studio than make somebody else rich.
US – What do you feel is holding you back?
Klip – In the beginning it was me. The gem known as the internet was ripe for the picking, and I was too ignorant to see it or realize its power. Now that I’m wiser the game is so saturated. I had deals laid down in front of me by Swishahouse and some other entities, but I didn’t have anyone around me that knew any more than I did. I missed out on a lot of opportunities.
US – Why can’t you seem to get your own state to back you?
Klip – We have a lot of uneducated and hateful people in this state that live to make sure no one outshines them. Everybody wants to have a label, but few know to Do Business As. I run into kats all the time that talk a great game but go MIA when it’s time to go to work. I personally know a businessman that lays out his reasoning for lack of success for Arkansas artists, but won’t attempt to help anyone come up. He sits around in a pool of his own arrogance happy that his predictions come to pass. I’m not rich, but I’ve done a lot (even did some work with Lil Flip, Fyngas, & Devin the Dude). I really feel that if the state would get behind me, the majors would definitely take notice. Why? Because I’m one of the most knowledgeable and talented guys you will ever meet in this state when it comes to the music game. Hop on the net and Google “Muniklip”. I’m 30 pages and counting.
US – Do you love your state? What should happen next?
Klip – Yeah, I love my state and wouldn’t trade it for any of the others. I do know that if I were somewhere else like Atlanta, that I would be established. A part of my really wants to set this state on fire though. What should happen next is that every hip hop music lover in Arkansas should get out and purchase my music and make me the official king of this state. When the majors come looking, I will gladly reach out to anyone needing exposure. It has to start with one artist first, and I feel that I am that artist. If anyone in the state disputes that, check your online presence against mine. My music is playing and is available for purchase all over the world.
